A Word from Beth:
"I first started going to the gym in 1999. Prior to that, the only form of exercise I had done was walking. I guess the reasons I started training are vain ones; I had turned 30 almost a year before, had 2 kids and things just didn't look the way they used to. My first day in the little gym in Barrington, NS, I told the trainer that I did not want muscles; I just wanted to tone up. I think that is a pretty typical statement that women make. However, once I started to see some definition I was hooked!! I wanted MUSCLES!! My diet didn't really change too much at that point but I wasn't looking to lose weight either."
"I didn't really entertain the thought of competing while I was living in Barrington. There were lots of guys lifting weights, but no one was competing, so there was no motivation. That all changed when I moved to Bridgewater. I had a gym membership before I even had an apartment! I had met Dave Naugler through a co-worker of mine, Darren McKeigan. Dave was very supportive of my training and after a year of lifting weights I started to think that maybe I could compete too. In the fall of 2000, I finally made the decision to compete and asked Dave for some help. He gave me some excellent diet and training advice and hooked me up with a workout partner (Geoff Keddy) who was also competing and who he felt would push me a little harder in the gym."
"I started going into Body Active to have Karl assess my body composition and he turned out to be a true asset. Karl is an amazing poser and gave me so much advice and encouragement. During the final weeks before the show he truly saved my sanity. Those last weeks really are a mind game!!!"
"I was thrilled with my placings in my first year competing and I plan to be back again. It was such a great experience and I had so much fun. I had initially wanted to do it just to say that I could do it. I have no doubt that the weight room will remain an integral part of my life into my old age."
